BAYLOR UNIVERSITY CONTINUES ITS TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE AT MODEL ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES IN SAN ANTONIO
Once again, Baylor University’s Model Organization of American States (MOAS) team took top honors in the MOAS simulation held at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas from 4-6 November. Representing the countries of Brazil and Costa Rica, Baylor students won the awards for Outstanding Delegation and Distinguished Delegation, respectively. Brazil’s Head Delegate, Daniella Romero (senior, International Studies major from Spring, Texas) took the top award for Outstanding Ambassador. Michael Lyssy (junior, International Studies major from Fall City, Texas) not only served as President of the model, but also received the Outstanding Chair Award. He was chosen to serve as Parliamentarian for next year’s model. Other awards won by Baylor students from the Costa Rica team included Distinguished Delegates in both the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights represented by Rob Bradfield (junior, Theater Arts major from Waco, Texas) and the Secretariat for Multi-Dimensional Security represented by Elizabeth Sanford (senior, International Studies major from Sachse, Texas) and Melissa Olshack (senior, History/French major from San Antonio, Texas). Brittney Quezada (junior, Honors /Political Science major from Sugarland, Texas) served as the Chair of the Executive Secretariat of Integral Development. Other members of the Brazilian Delegation included: Cody Brasher (sophomore, Psychology/International Studies major from Moody, Alabama), Bianca Kane (junior, International Studies major from Geneva, IL), Torie Rhodes, Co-Head Delegate (senior, International Studies major from Pasadena, California), Drew Vincent (junior, International Studies major from Mabelton, Georgia), Jenna Thompson (senior, Journalism/International Studies major from Indianapolis, Indiana), Lathan Andrews (junior, History major from Clifton, Texas) and Henry Clay Johnson (senior, History major from San Antonio, Texas). Other members of the Costa Rican Delegation included Head Delegate Catherine Gibson (junior, Latin American Studies major from Bedford, Texas), Carlos Rodarte (freshman, International Studies/Political Science major from Houston, Texas), Emily Erickstad (senior, Economics/Public Administration/Spanish major from Longview, Texas), James Rhodes (freshman, Business major from Pasadena, Texas) and Chris Mahfouz (senior, University Scholar from post Neches, Texas). The team is trained by Dr. Joan E. Supplee, the Ralph L. and Bessie Mae Chair in History. In addition to the competition, students were able to meet four Ambassadors: Gene Scassa, Ambassador-in-Residence at St. Mary’s University, Dr. James Creagan (who also served as a judge), and Director of Intenational Studies at Incarnate Word University, Donna Hrinack, Keynote Speaker, and Kenneth Tillett, Professor of Political Science at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Other judges included Professor Janet E. Adamski from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor and Gwen Creagan.
