Baylor University's MOAS Team Shines at Washington Model

Spring 2014 MOAS Group — Baylor University’s MOAS team at the Argentine Mission to the OAS.

Fifteen members of Baylor’s MOAS team travelled to Washington, D.C. this past week to participate in the Washington Model Organization of American States (WMOAS) hosted by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Institute for Diplomatic Dialogue. Twenty-six teams from the United States, Guatemala, Venezuela, Colombia, and Argentina debated resolutions in five committees and worked through a crisis scenario that involved resolving an election dispute in El Salvador. Will Gregory (Senior,University Scholar, Kerrville, TX) served as President and Chair of the General Committee. Additionally, General Committee Delegate Ewan Hamilton-Short (Senior, Business Fellow, Waco, TX) was elected to serve as President for the 2015 WMOAS. OAS Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Albert Ramdin addressed the opening session of the model and Jorge Sanin, Director of International Relations gave closing remarks in the Hall of the Americas to the student delegations.

The Baylor team also visited the Argentine Mission to the OAS for a briefing on the country that Baylor represented. Students were able to discuss Argentine policy on migration, security, development and human rights and pose questions on the importance of diplomacy with Alternate Representative Maria Paula Zaninni. Other team members included: Head Delegate Alex Pecoraro (Senior, History,Westminster, MD), Co-Head Delegate Sandy Guillen (Senior, Political Science, Houston, TX), Priscilla Escobedo (Senior,International Studies, Irving, TX), Brian Ham (Senior, International Studies, O’Fallon, IL), Joan Stanton (Junior, Political Science,Massapequa, NY) Lauren Lee (Sophomore, University Scholars, Olathe, KN), Rustin Bridges (Senior, History, Longview, TX), and Micah-Leah Woolley (Senior, History, Houston, TX), Mucia Flores (Freshman, Great Texts, Laredo, TX) was selected as General Committee rapporteur, and Richard Horace (Senior, Political Science, Beaumont, TX) was the team’s Public Information Officer.Cristina Mendez (Senior, University Scholar, Brownsville, TX) served as the Team Assistant. The team was coached by Dr. Joan E. Supplee, the Ralph L. and Bessie Mae Lynn Professor of History.
