Baylor University’s Model Organization of American States Team takes top honors at the World Affairs Council of San Antonio’s Fifth Organization of American States Model competition. On November 8th, 21 members of the MOAS team from Baylor and team advisors Dr. Janet E. Adamski from the Political Science Department and Dr. Joan E. Supplee, Director of Latin American Studies, traveled to San Antonio to participate in the three-day simulation. This year’s model included 23 different teams and 223 student participants. Baylor University represented the states of Argentina and Peru. Students wrote, debated, and cooperated in passing resolutions from five different Inter-American committees that dealt with topics as diverse as: human rights, democracy, hemispheric security, development, and trade. Baylor students chaired two of the five committees. During the simulation, Phillip T. Chicola, Director of the Office of Andean Affairs from the U. S. Department of State and Miguel Ruiz Cabañas, Permanent Representative of Mexico to the Organization of American States addressed the student delegates on issues of hemispheric concern. The students who received special recognition at the awards ceremony on November 10, 2001 include: Peter Ghobrial , Senior, Philosophy major from Baytown, Texas as Outstanding Head Delegate; Emily Matlock, Sophomore, University Scholar from Shreveport. Louisiana as Outstanding Head Delegate from the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission; Joansandy Wong, Senior, Political Science Major and BIC, from Greenville, Texas as Outstanding Head Delegate from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Committee; Eric Heraly. Junior, Biochemistry Major from Bay City, Texas as Distinguished Delegate in the Committee on Hemispheric Security; and Jennifer Cásarez, Junior, Latin American Studies major from Hewitt, Texas as Distinguished Delegate from the Human Rights Committee. Baylor University was also recognized as Outstanding Delegation at the model.
