- Edgar Maya Model Organization of American States (OAS) Conference
- April 3rd- 10th 2004
Members of Baylor University’s Model Organization of American States (MOAS) team participated in a simulation of the Organization of American States (OAS) at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C. from April 3rd to April 10th 2004. Eighteen universities participated in the model including five teams from Latin American universities. Representing the Federative Republic do Brasil, Baylor University team members interviewed Brazilian Minister Counselor Carlos José Middeldorf and sat on five different committees of the OAS. They wrote and negotiated the passage of seventeen different resolutions dealing with topics as varied as hemispheric security, eradication of poverty, rights of disabled peoples, sustainable development, protection of cyber security, combating corruption, free trade agreement of the Americas, and reorganization and financing of the OAS. This year’s model was particularly exciting because of the unfolding situation in Haiti. At the closing ceremonies of the model, Ambassador of Mexico and Permanent Representative Miguel Ruiz-Cabañas
spoke to the model about the role of the OAS in preserving democracy in the hemisphere and the proposed free trade agreement of the Americas. During the week’s events, Emily Matlock, a Baylor senior and Latin American Studies major from Shreveport Louisiana, served as the 2004 Edgar Maya MOAS President and Chase Browning, a Baylor junior and Latin American Studies major from Colleyville, Texas, served as the 2004 First Committee Chair. The Baylor delegation was led by Head Delegate Leah Davis, a Baylor senior and Accounting major from Waco, Texas, and co-Head Delegate Joey Carona, a Baylor senior and International Studies major from Dallas, Texas. Baylor delegate, Ryan Walters, a Baylor senior and History/Political Science major from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, received the honor of presenting his resolution to the General Committee after being awarded with the best resolution which sparked debate overall in the conference. At the conclusion of the conference, Baylor delegate, Ray López, a Baylor junior Latin American Studies and Political Science major from San Antonio, Texas, won the election for the 2005 Committee 2 “B” Chair position. Other team members included: Katy Matlock (Freshmen, English, Shreveport LA), Luis Vivaldi (Junior, International Studies, Carthage TX), Ricardo Carrillo (Junior, Political Science, Amarillo TX), Caleb Jones (Junior, Biology/International Studies, Albuquerque NM), Lisette Vitta (Sophomore, International Studies, The Woodlands TX), Cristina Colmenares (Senior, International Studies, The Woodlands TX), and Laura Samudio (Sophomore, Latin American Studies, Austin TX).
